Schools in Croydon will be shut today and hospital and council services possibly affected as public sector workers go on strike.
Fifty schools are set to be affected by the day-long industrial action as staff walkout in a row over pensions.
Croydon Council has promised to keep refuse and recycling collections and meal on wheels services running.
The council expects libraries, including the central library in Katharine Street, Thornton Heath, South Norwood and Bradmore Green to be open but could run a reduced service.
The museum and Riesco Gallery in the Clocktower complex will also be open, while leisure centres, with the exception of Croydon Arena are also expected to remain open.
Croydon University Hospital said it had worked with local trade union representatives to minimise disruption and had redeployed staff.
It said it had not cancelled any operations or appointments but said patients should expect some disruption.
