Kids’ faces lit up after a face painter and stilt walkers were among the attractions at the London Road Christmas switch on.

Mayor of Croydon Councillor Graham Bass turned on the festive lights last night as the community came together for the event.

Supermarket Lidl have added to the Christmas cheer by donating lights to neighbouring shops.

The supermarket was one of many along the road that were hit by looters during the London riots.

Georgina Hall, spokesperson for Lidl UK, said: “We are delighted to celebrate our recent reopening by making this gesture to our neighbours at such an important time for all businesses."

The area is to benefit from a share of one-off Government funding made available to riot-hit areas in the wake of August’s disturbances.

In addition to the Christmas Lights Switch On, a festive shopping day is taking place on Saturday, December 10 when Santa’s Grotto will take up residence in London Road.

Performance areas will be set up outside The Club and Croydon Voluntary Action (CVA), showcasing local talent as well as hosting other entertainment.
