A teenager has been arrested after attempting to con a pensioner in West Ewell.

The 82-year-old man received a phone call at about 10.30am on Thursday, November 24, from a man who claimed to be from the water board.

The caller told the man that repair works needed to be carried out at his property at a cost of £3,000 - he added that someone would be call round later that day to collect the money.

The pensioner tried to withdraw money from his bank but an employee became suspicious and advised the man not to hand over any cash and to report the incident to the police.

Later that day officers arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of fraud.

A 19-year-old man from East Ham has been released on police bail until 25 January 2012 pending further enquiries.
