A road smash brought a busy junction to a standstill at lunchtime after a crash involving a double decker bus and two cars.

No injuries were reported following the accident at 12.45pm which involved a Renault and a red Vauxhall Astra, which was severely damaged.

The Astra’s owner, 22-year-old Craig Wake, said he was driving from work at the Nuffield Health gym in Wimbledon when the incident happened.

Mr Wake said: “The bus was going right [from Merton High Street], he was running a red light and as I came around it hit me.”

Mr Wake, from Morden, was unscathed despite his car being crushed after it collided with the side of the bus and with the Renault, which came from the opposite direction.

He said he was left stranded in the middle of the crossroads with the car’s bumper hanging off.

A cyclist who regularly uses the junction, 22-year-old Harry McAlister, said the junction is “dangerous”.

He said: “As a cyclist it becomes clear that the amount of traffic at the junction is too heavy for the lights to handle.

“There’s a general lack of respect for signals.”

The backlog of traffic started to clear around 1.15pm when Mr Wake was able to drive his car off the crossroads.

The bumper had to be carried separately and was left outside South Wimbledon station while a police officer dealt with the incident.

Co-worker and Mr Wake’s aunt, Julie Wake, was following her nephew in her car behind, and said: “It was his pride and joy.”

A Merton Police spokesman said no arrests had been made and the matter would be settled privately by the drivers.
