Primary schools in the borough may expand to meet growing demand for places.

Six schools in Wandsworth could take an extra 210 pupils each, creating a total of 1260 new places.

Riversdale, West Hill, Hillbrook, Smallwood, Swaffield and Penwortham Primary Schools have been earmarked to increase their capacity.

Wandsworth Council are consulting with the public to determine whether the changes will go ahead before any formal planning applications are submitted.

Each school may take an additional 30 pupil reception class by September 2012, which would rise gradually each year until all year groups include an extra class.

The council’s schools spokesman Councillor Kathy Tracey said: “Wandsworth is an extremely popular place to bring up children and the demands on our school system continue to rise.

"These plans are the latest phase of our primary school investment programme which is increasing capacity where it is needed most.

“Our aim is to give parents as much choice as possible when it comes to selecting a school for their children."

Putney Hospital is also being converted into a new state primary school, with 420 places.
