London Fire Brigade (LFB) has won an award for its exemplary first aid standards.

It won the community award for emergency services at the inaugural St John Ambulance first aid awards.

LFB was honoured by the first aid charity at an awards ceremony in London on Wednesday 30 November, hosted by BBC newsreader Sophie Raworth.

It was commended for its exemplary first aid standards, with judges saying since the 7/7 bombings the brigade has spent four years training its operational staff.

All fire engines are now fitted with advanced first aid equipment including defibrillators and 92 per cent of its 5,000 staff have advanced first aid training.

Sue Killen, chief executive of St John Ambulance, said: ‘London Fire Brigade was deserving of the title of Community Award for Emergency Services because of its programme designed to improve the equipment on its engines and the first aid skills of its staff. "I hope they enjoyed the evening and continue their commitment to being the difference between a life lost and a life saved."
