A caterer who had recently qualified as a first aider saved a man's life after seeing him collapsed on a golf course.

John Stanton, of Wallington, was about to tee-off at the first hole at Chipstead Golf Club in Coulsdon when he suddenly collapsed in April this year.

His playing partner Martin Parker, tried to help, but his friend had suffered a stroke and a heart attack and had stopped breathing.

Nick Baldwin, 42, a catering manager at the golf club was walking towards his car with some shopping when he saw the commotion on the first tee.

He dropped his bags and ran over to the course to find Mr Stanton flat out on his back.

Mr Baldwin said: "I was just walking to the car and I saw Martin hunched over a man. When I got there, I looked at Martin, and we just thought, 'here we go again'.

Last year, in an incredible coincidence, both Mr Parker and Mr Baldwin were at the course when another man collapsed half way through a round.

Unfortunately, the man died, despite the two men's best efforts, and so Mr Baldwin was determined not for it to happen again.

He said: "Martin was checking Johns vital statistics, and we both just looked at each other, and went for it."

The two men's heroics saved Mr Stanton's life, according to paramedics. Mr Parker and Mr Baldwin have been awarded Royal Humane Society resuscitation certificates buy the Royal Humane Society.

Mr Baldwin said: "Its nice to be honoured for what we did, but it's all a bit embarrassing really. I'm sure anyone would have done the same, it was just instinct."

The picture is taken from a captains day at the club earlier this year, when Mr Stanton invited Mr Baldwin to be his playing partner as a thank you.
