Residents only have a few more days to make their views known on proposed changes to constituency boundaries.

Some 50 people attended a meeting at St Leonard’s Church last Friday to discuss the proposed changes, which would result in parts of Streatham being included in three constituencies- Mitcham, Streatham and Tooting, and Clapham Common.

In a letter addressed to the meeting, former Streatham MP Keith Hill said: “It makes no sense to detach Streatham South or Streatham Hill from a single constituency. Their people have the same identity and the same common issues.”

Simon Hooberman, a member of the Streatham Conservatives and former councillor for Streatham South said: “Frankly, I think the proposals as they stand stink. But I think it is not going to be easy to come up with a solution the Boundary Commission accept.”

But Chairman of Streatham Conservatives, Ben Everitt said: "We are of the view that the aims and objectives of the Boundary Commission are right and should be supported - it will ensure a fairer and more democratic system - something we should all be embracing.

"Streatham has a great community spirit, as embodied by organisations like Streatham Action and Streatham Festival, which are driven by a cause within Streatham, and are not defined by its parliamentary boundaries."

A public consultation about the plans, drawn up by the Boundary Commission for England, closes on December 5.
