A children’s reading club is being relaunched for the first time in 50 years.

The John Lewis Kingston Jackanory Club, which started in the 1950s, hosted live book readings to children who would visit the department store from across the borough.

Over the Christmas period this year the store is welcoming youngsters to the Place To Eat to listen to some of their favourites, including the modern day classic The Gruffalo.

Matthew Crow, toy department manager at John Lewis Kingston, said: “We’re reviving the original Saturday Morning Children’s Club, which John Lewis started in the 1950s, where hundreds of children enjoyed live book readings.

“This is especially prevalent in recent times as we hear that one in four London 11-year-olds can’t read properly.”
