The Roehampton Students’ Union hosted the first in a series of Christmas Make a Difference (M.A.D) Projects, to inspire students to get involved with the many volunteering opportunities at the University of Roehampton.

In partnership with Regenerate- Reaching the IS-olated Elderly (RISE), an organization whose vision is to eradicate the isolation of the elderly in the Putney and Roehampton area, more than 40 ‘seasoned’ guests, the oldest of which being a stunning 102, attended a beautifully organized tea party complete with delicious cakes and sweets donated by local bakeries.

The elderly visitors had a chance to experience the University campus, play Wii computer games, and mingle with current students and RSU staff while enjoying live entertainment by Ceili O’Connor, voice from the west end musical, The Wizard of Oz.

A few of the guests graced the rapt audience with a tune of their own and the event closed with relationships being formed across the generational divide and smiles on the faces of all attendees.

Tom Tennant, a full time staff member of Regenerate-RISE, said that he was so thankful for events like this and for the partnership with the RSU and University students.

“Most of these people wouldn’t even leave their homes if it wasn’t for things like this,” he explained.

This is the first of the three Christmas M.A.D. Projects, the next of which will take place at Roehampton Sports and Fitness Centre.

RSU staff and student volunteers will hold a community Christmas party for underprivileged families living in the local estate.
