A 63-year-old found hanged in his bedroom did not want to be a burden to his friends and family, an inquest heard.

Robert Dorfler, of Kent Close, Mitcham, killed himself at his home on Sunday, September 11, after leaving a suicide note expressing a desire for his worries to go away.

An inquest held at Westminster Coroner’s Court on Thursday, November 25, delivered a ruling of suicide.

In a heartfelt note left in his second-floor flat Mr Dorfler wrote: "I very much would like all the worries to go away and I could live in peace.

"Andrew [my friend] has been a great help but I feel it’s so unfair to put my burden on to him.

"I feel really suicidal as there is no way out and I cannot keep going on like this, there is no other way I could do anything else as it would be a burden to everybody else."

The divorced father-of-one, who had been treated for a bladder tumour a few months before his death, was found by police who forced entry to his home following a call from concerned friend Andrew King.

Mr King told police he was concerned for Dutch-born Mr Dorfler’s welfare as he had not heard from him since Friday, September 9, an unusual occurrence as the friends spoke on a daily basis.

PC Nicholas Miles was one of the officers who found Mr Dorfler’s body.

He said: “As you entered the flat, immediately on the right, the bedroom door swung inwards and [he was] on the corridor side.”

Coroner Dr Fiona Wilcox added: “It will have been clear to Mr Dorfler that if he performed such an act it would almost certainly have taken his life.”
