Detectives and other police officers were out in force on Sutton High Street on Wednesday raising awareness of a bank scam.
Police handed out hundreds of crime prevention leaflets to shoppers.
They are also following up multiple reports of a bank scam which involves a telephone call from your ‘bank’ to confirm your credit card and PIN details and a visit to your home to collect your card.
The callers state there has been a bank administration error and promise to replace the card.
However, their real intention is to steal the card and obtain cash from bank accounts at cashpoint machines.
They target elderly and vulnerable residents, particularly those living on their own.
Detective constable Ian Cherrington, of Sutton CID, said: “We have been talking to local people to raise awareness of the bank scam.
"We have had a number of people approach us and tell us that this crime has happened to them.
“I would encourage people to come forward and report it and help us by making vulnerable relatives or neighbours aware of this scam so we can help prevent further victims of this crime.
“We are working closely with colleagues from other London boroughs and Surrey police to investigate these crimes and catch those responsible.”
