An 81-year-old woman was injured when she walked into the side of a learner driver's bus - just as he was taking his test.

A witness to the incident, which happened in Grove Road, Sutton, at about 2pm on November 30, reported seeing an elderly lady with her face covered in blood lying in the road.

The bus driver was taking his driving test in an Arriva London training vehicle.

Dave Jones, commercial support manager for Arriva London, said: "It would appear that as the training bus was passing through a green traffic signal the elderly lady stepped off the kerb and into the side of the bus about two thirds of the way down the vehicle.

"The driver stopped immediately and emergency services were called.

"Because of the incident the driving test was suspended and will be arranged for a later date.

"We do not expect there to be any allegations made against the driver."

Ambulance staff treated the lady for leg arm and head injuries and she was taken to hospital.

She suffered a broken elbow and bruising to her body.

Officers who attended the scene are due to submit a full report on the collision which will go to the traffic investigation team.
