More recyclable waste will be taken by the council when it launches its new fruit salad-themed bin collections later this month.
When new bin collections come into force on April 16, residents will be able to recycle aluminium foil, yogurt pots, plastic food trays and margarine tubs, which Sutton Council was previously unable to recycle.
It said it and Viridor, the company which processes Sutton’s waste, had finally found a company able to recycle some of the harder to process plastics and aluminium foil.
The materials can be recycled in the green wheeled bin for the first time.
The new bin collections - each assigned a fruity title to make them easier for residents to remember - will start at 6am and finish by 8.30pm from Monday to Friday, with Saturday collections running from 7am to 2.45pm.
Using fewer vehicles running more frequently, the council said it can save £500,000 without cutting collections, introducing extra charges or laying off staff.
In the week before the change, residents will receive leaflets and calendars through their letterbox and bin hangers, advising them of any changes to their collection days, along with a list of things that can be recycled.
