Wandsworth Council's Our Greener Borough campaign has been hailed as the best in Britain at an awards ceremony described as the environmental Oscars.
The town hall won the Public Sector category at this year’s People and Environment Achievement (PEA) Awards.
The category recognises a local or national public sector organisation whose work has helped advance more sustainable living.
The Our Greener Borough initiative was devised to help reduce Wandsworth’s environmental impacts. It is made up of individual schemes focusing on promoting sustainable living to schools, residents, businesses and community groups.
Michael Singham, the council’s waste policy manager, was presented with the PEA award last month at the ceremony held in London’s South Bank.
He said: "We were surprised to be shortlisted for this award and very pleased indeed to be named the winner.
"Our colleagues and councillors are delighted with this recognition of our efforts with ‘Our Greener Borough’, a scheme which we have run successfully over the last five years."
