Plans to bring beach volleyball to Wimbledon have been given the green light after a “very positive” response from residents.
Merton Council will now install the courts and a picnic area in Wimbledon Park as part of a project to mark this summer’s Olympic Games.
Councillor Oonagh Moulton, who represents Wimbledon Park on Merton Council, welcomed the project and said her family were “looking forward to a new sport this summer.”
The survey of 123 people, carried out between March 21 and 26, included 55 per cent of people who already play beach volleyball, but only 30 per cent said they visited the park at least once a month.
Other plans for marking London 2012, during which the tennis event will be held at the All England Club, included projecting the Olympic rings on to the side of the civic centre in Morden.
The Queen will visit Merton on May 15 while Games-themed banners will hang in every corner of the borough.
