We are writing in response to a number of letters printed regarding the decision to implement railings on a small part of the riverside.

While we all accept the right of an individual to express a view on the subject, it may be helpful for residents to consider a more informed account of this issue. Perhaps some facts may enlighten those few: l The police want the railings.

l The area the railings are designed to protect is perhaps the most dangerous part of the riverside for anyone falling in.

l The currents there give nobody any real chance of surviving, regardless of whether they have been drinking or not.

l Three independent and external bodies told the council that railings were an absolute necessity.

l If the railings were not installed, and in the event of another accident, the council would be left open to lawsuits that could potentially cost the taxpayer millions of pounds. The council could also face a corporate manslaughter charge.

The railings are a necessary course of action. If residents want further tragic deaths on our riverside, a council paying millions of pounds in compensation, and officers and elected members in prison for corporate manslaughter then that is up to their own consciences.

Ours are very clear on this issue and we have made the right decision.
