The royal borough now has 77 approved street parties taking place over the jubilee weekend as the race for the most number of street parties across London heats up.

Last week we reported the borough had 48 parties taking place.

However street party applications have since been flooding in to Kingston Council after it agreed to extend the deadline following revelations Kingston’s celebrations were lagging behind its neighbours.

Latest figures showed Kingston was in forth position with 77 approved street parties – ahead of Merton which has 62 parties, but Wandsworth remains king of the parties with 233, Richmond is a close second with 230 and Sutton is in third position with 110 parties.

Kingston mayor Mary Heathcote said: “I will be visiting as many street parties as I can. I hope many more community groups will come forward and use this opportunity to mark the jubilee in a special way.

“As the most ancient of royal borough’s it is important to show that we support the Queen and the royal family.”

Canbury Park residents in Kingston will be celebrating the jubilee in style on Saturday, June 2 from 2pm, with the longest street party in the borough.

Resident and organising member Lucy Jones, 45, said: “I hope the sun shines. This will be the longest street party and I hope it will be the best too. We are expecting 350 people – maybe more.”

There will also be a game of tug of war with opposite sides of the road competing against each other.

To mark the jubilee Kingston town centre will also be hosting a full day of activities on Tuesday, June 5 from midday.

Eden Walk will be adopting a swinging 60s theme with a live band, while Memorial Gardens and Memorial Square will be transformed into the 1970s and 80s, where visitors can take part in a Spacehopper race or 80s aerobics class .

The Bentall Centre will be putting on a grand Britpop Roller Disco and the All Saints Church will have a fete on its lawns.

The church was visited by the Queen in her jubilee year to unveil a stone to commemorate the crowning of her predecessor on the site 1,100 years earlier.

Strictly Come Dancing’s Izabela will also perform with a team of dancers at Old London Road’s street party.
