This was a tough away FA Cup (sponsored by E-ON) tie for the Tanners with their opponents one level up on them and a long journey to a side that they had not played before.

The fact that they battled for a deserved draw and a replay on Tuesday night at the Grove is great credit to both the team and the considerable travelling support.

The first half was a fairly dour affair with a war of attrition in the midfield being the most significant area of play.

What the first half lacked, the second more than compensated for.

Within two minutes of the re-start, the referee contrived to take part in a Tanners short corner, deflecting the ball to a Mangotsfield player and allowing the home side to break away and score through Chris Lane.

Prior to that the home goalkeeper did well to turn away a Dave Stevens shot.

By this time Leatherhead were under severe pressure with an almost certain goal being spectacularly cleared off the line by Adam Gray with Paul Borg beaten.

Any celebrations that the home fans were starting stopped in their tracks.

They were stunned into silence again when the Tanners drew level less than 15 minutes later.

A ball into Dave Stevens was held up by the striker and slipped to the late arriving Sargent. Leaving three home defenders floundering and the remainder expecting the more obvious pull back, the midfielder elected to shot and scored with a superb strike.

The half wasn't short of controversy. Both sides had penalty appeals turned down.

Leatherhead expected better from the officials when a grounded Mangotsfield defender scooped the ball away with his arm and the home side had a shout turned down when Jamie Beer's challenge was adjudged to have taken the ball rather than the man.

With both sides going for a win, there were chances at both ends.

Although a goal kick was given Paul Borg saved spectacularly from a header that can't have been more than two yards away from him when struck and, at the other end, last year's top scorer, Dave Stevens, had an effort cleared off the line.

All of this sets the scene for an enthralling replay at the Grove on Tuesday night.

The Tanners will certainly relish the opportunity of getting the Bristol side on to their superior surface but you can be sure that their opponents will want to put paid to the ambitions of another great Leatherhead Cup run.
