Six Molesey Boat Club rowers were officially named in Team GB for this summer’s London Olympics last Wednesday, but the only thing on Surbiton’s Moe Sbihi’s mind is Munich.
Andrew Triggs-Hodge and Tom James will pair up in the men’s four at Lake Dorney in August, while Sbihi, Greg Searle and James Foad will all go in the men’s eight, with George Nash competing in the men’s pair.
Molesey’s Cameron Nichol misses out, despite having won men’s eight silver at the World Championships in 2010 and 2011.
Sbihi, who was discovered after testing by GB Rowing Team staff at his school, described last week’s confirmation he had made the Olympic squad as a “fairy tale”.
But he admitted a good performance at this weekend’s final World Cup regatta in Munich remained top of his agenda as Team GB aim to put one over men’s eight Olympic favourites and main rivals Germany.
“Selection for the Olympics is still a milestone on the way. It is only when we are on the race start that we are really there,” he said.
“There’s still work to do, it is still a long way out. We still need to make sure Munich, our last chance for race practice before the Olympics, is tip top.”
