The Mayor and Mayoress of Sutton opened St Raphael’s Hospice Fete on Sunday, June 24.

Councillor Sean Brennan and Gill Brennan attended the fete at the Hospice grounds in London Road, North Cheam.

There was entertainment for all the family as well as cake stalls and games hosted by Fulham Football Club’s mascot, Billy the Badger.

Coun Brennan said: “It’s wonderful that the Hospice has cared for so many residents. Over 25 years the Hospice must have looked after thousands of people, their families and friends. On behalf of all patients I’d like to thank the Hospice and a big thank you to all staff, supporters and volunteers without which this couldn’t be possible.

"It costs £4m per year to run the Hospice, £3m of which has to be raised from the community by holding events like this fete.

"I remember walking on hot coals for the Hospice two years ago – I believe there’s another firewalk in October and I think I’m signed up for that.”

Eric Nicholls MBE is the chairman of the MG Owners Club in Epsom and helped St Raphael’s Hospice co-ordinate the fete.

In April this year, Mr Nicholls, 76, received his MBE from the Queen at Windsor Castle for services to the Sainsbury’s Veterans Association.

He also works with charities including St Raphael’s Hospice and The Children’s Trust in Tadworth.

Susannah Forland the events organiser at St Raphael’s Hospice said: “Both these events – the summer fete and Light up a Life services - would not be so successful if it wasn’t for the dedication of both Eric and the Epsom Area MG Owners’ Club.

“Eric is an absolute delight to work with and is very committed, doing whatever he can to help us. We are all grateful for his involvement and constant support.”

The fete aimed to raise much needed funds for the Hospice. To donate visit: justgiving.com/giveyourquidappeal/
