Regarding the letter "All I'm saying is, give peace event a chance" (October 5).
Last month Tony Blair told the Labour Party conference that we need a new generation of nuclear weapons. Last week North Korea conducted an underground nuclear explosion. And here we are in Merton wrangling over who should be allowed to take part in Peace Week.
The message that we need to get across is violence breeds violence. Kofi Annan has said that the decency of civil society (that is us!) is the best hope for the future of the world. We can no longer put our faith in governments.
So join the UN Association, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament or your church's Justice and Peace group. Write to MPs Stephen Hammond and Siobhain McDonagh. A token Peace Week is not enough.
