There will be a review of a guest house, which is used as emergency homeless accommodation by Lambeth Council, after a man was stabbed.
Police were called to the Apollo Guest House in March on June 28 after a man in his 30’s was repeatedly stabbed in the early hours of the morning. He is still in hospital.
In March, a man was also found dead at the property, in Beulah Road, Thornton Heath. The temporary housing block in Croydon has created havoc for residents, Madeline and Peter Lindsay, who moved next door three years ago, claim.
In December last year, Channel 4’s Dispatches programme singled out the property in its Landlords from Hell show, with an undercover reporter discovering fungus on the carpet, stains in the bed and bed bugs during a stay.
Mrs Lindsay said: "This could all be prevented if they were forced to have a 24 hour site manager. Local residents have become immune to the sight of police cars, ambulances and fire engines outside the property at all times of day and night. "Pleas and petitions by residents for permanent, 24/7 on site management are ignored or deflected. Everyone expects ‘something bad’ to happen soon."
The couple have written to the council, their local MP Malcolm Wicks as well as Grant Shapps, housing minister and Jack Dromey, shadow housing minister following the most recent incident.
A Lambeth Council spokesman said: "We use the Apollo Guest House in emergencies mainly for single households presenting as homeless out of hours for one night or over the weekend.
"Croydon Council has inspected these premises recently and passed them fit for use. We will be speaking to colleagues at Croydon about this incident and assess whether we need to review our use of this Guest House."
Robert Lindsay, 48, of Alderburt Terrace, Stockwell was charged on Friday, 29 June, with GBH with intent to endanger life on 28 June in Beulah Road, Thornton Heath. He appeared at Camberwell Green Magistrates Court on Saturday and is next due in Croydon Crown Court on September 21.
