Plans for 22 houses and 12 flats on the former Walton swimming pool were voted through by councillors at a meeting on Monday, July 2.
The site in Kings Close was sold by the council to Linden Homes for £4.4m in April this year, after years of controversy and wrangling over what to do with the land.
The plans provide 50 per cent affordable housing and 81 car parking spaces.
The homes themselves will be in a red brick style with Edwardian features.
Some concerns were raised about traffic from construction vehicles, the size of bin storage, and parking from town users in the day.
But Councillor Rachael Lake said: “I think this is amazing. I’m even more pleased with it than what I thought I would be. I really like this.”
Councillors voted it through with nine votes in favour and one abstention.
