By Richard Tracey AM, Assembly Member for Merton and Wandsworth (Greater London Authority)
I would like to refute the misleading statements made in the article, 'Safer Neighbourhood Teams will be scrapped, Merton police confirm'.
First and foremost, Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNTs) are not being scrapped – quite the opposite. The Mayor plans to ensure SNTs are more robust and better meet local needs.
He has made a commitment to transfer 2,000 officers into SNTs from back office roles so that each SNT will have a minimum of three officers and three PCSOs.
This was not an “invention from off the top of Boris Johnson’s head” as demonstrated last week when the Assistant Commissioner for Territorial Policing confirmed to Assembly Members that these plans were under way.
