A dangerous road in Sutton will be made much safer thanks to £16,000-worth of changes.

Mums with buggies, dog walkers and cyclists were vulnerable as they travelled along the Kings Lane Bridge at the end of Hillcroombe Road.

The 3.6 metre wide bridge only allows for one line of traffic at a time and approaches to the bridge are on sharp bends.

Residents have reported bumping in to other cars and personal injuries.

On July 5 at the Sutton South, Cheam and Belmont Local Committee meeting Councillor Heather Honour presented a proposal drawn up by traffic engineers.

Details include building out the footways on both sides of the junction and providing a longer footway for pedestrians.

Warning signs will be upgraded and made more prominent as well as £500 of costs made at the Carshalton end of the bridge.

Work is due to start in November 2012 and funding will be allocated from the Local Implementation Plan.

Coun Honour said: "Someone said to me that the road is so dangerous we should leave it as it is.

"I don’t think that is good enough for our residents who risk their lives every day as they walk or drive over Kings Lane Bridge. "Our traffic engineers have worked hard to find the best solution because no one wants the road closed to traffic or made one way.

"It is great that funding can be found quickly and let’s hope that the work can be completed before we have snow and ice on the bridge."
