Entrepreneurs from across the borough snapped up the chance to set up their stall in Surrey Street market.

Fifty pitches were made available to budding businesses on July 6 and 7, for just £10 in celebration of Love Your Local Market week.

Croydon's rich diversity was evident in the variety of businesses who set up their stalls.

Products on offer to customers included hand made greeting cards, vintage clothing, jewellery and accessories.

Food fans were also treated to home-made pickles and Indian delights, such as the Dosa, a fermented pancake make from rice batter and black lentils.

Laavannya Paramanathan from Indian Restaurant the Dosa Lounge, said: "We are here because it is a great chance just to get a bit of exposure. Our type of food is quite niche, being from south India.

"We are here to selling some stuff, but also to let people know we are here."

Business studies and ICT students from Thomas More School also took advantage of deal to get their first taste of market trading.

In an effort to cater to every market, the students from year nine and ten sold a range of products including sweets, toys, books and CDs, with the proceeds being donated to Cancer Research.

Teacher Verne Sylvester added: "We thought it would be an ideal venture for the students and a chance for them to raise money for a good cause.

"Some of them are realising it is not an easy ride, it is a good experience for them."

Twenty-five novice traders pitched their stalls on Friday, with another 25 setting up on Sunday.

Market Inspector Fiona Woodcock said: "I am thrilled to see the market looking as it used to be and I take my hat off to them.

"They have all made the effort to come out on what was predicted to be a really foul day weather-wise."
