This summer will see an unprecedented demand on policing resources as we support our partners deliver a safe and secure Olympic games. Police in Lambeth will still have, very much an emphasis on protecting local neighbourhoods from the types of crime that affect them most.

You will pleased to hear that we are currently seeing a reduction of 14 per cent for household burglaries in comparison to this time last year in Lambeth, which is about one hundred fewer reported burglaries since the financial year April 2011.

This is being achieved through increased patrols in targeted areas and with the assistance of our partners in the Community Safety Unit at the Local Authority.

Part of this involves joint patrols between PCSO’s and a partnership funded crime prevention security van that is tasked to visit and improve the home security of the most vulnerable in Lambeth.

In the upcoming weeks your local officers will be delivering leaflets that provide valuable advice on securing your home against burglary and promoting awareness on the subject.

In addition our Safer Neighbourhoods officers visit those recently released from prison to ensure that they are less likely to re-offend and have adequate support from other agencies.

Historically we are aware that during the summer months we tend to see this crime type rise so we would like to remind you to take the time to read the leaflets or visit our website; www.met.police.uk/crimeprevention for simple tips such as remembering to lock your windows and doors when you are not at home or to take advantage of property marking schemes such as SmartWater or SelectaDNA.

Our dedicated burglary unit works successfully to bring more offenders to justice and recently has seen a man charged for a burglary in West Norwood as a result of forensic evidence found at the scene, while the quick and vigilant actions of a member of public in Streatham saw the arrest and charge of another young man for burglary. Our officers also work alongside our borough intelligence unit to mount proactive operations targeting criminals.

As well as looking after your own property please look out for your neighbours to help them do the same. Or why not organise a local Neighbourhood Watch if there is not one already in your area because evidence shows streets with a Neighbourhood Watch scheme are less likely to experience break ins.

Contact your local Safer Neighbourhoods officers for more information on how to set up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme or advice on crime prevention or property marking by visiting; www.met.police.uk/saferneighbourhoods Report anything suspicious to police. In an emergency always dial 999 otherwise you can contact us on 101.

Together let’s continue the reduction in burglary to make it a summer to enjoy.
