A roundabout has received an Olympic makeover in the form of an 11 metre cyclist made of flowers.

The Esher bypass roundabout, opposite the Barley Mow pub in Hersham, has been decorated with the eye-catching design.

The wheels were planted in red, white and blue begonias, lobelia and alyssum.

It promises to be a highlight on August 1, when the country will have high hopes for the British cycling team passing through Elmbridge with the time trial.

Flower bikes decorated by community groups are also due to be installed on roundabouts along the Olympic cycle route in Elmbridge and bedding displays are being planted in the London 2012 colours.

In the autumn, when the roundabout is replanted with a Hersham in Bloom theme, the cyclist will find a new home in West Molesey Recreation Ground, where it will serve as a lasting reminder of the Games.

Councillor Jan Fuller said: “The Olympic planting programme and cycling displays across the borough have been designed to invite local residents and visitors to celebrate these once in a lifetime events coming to Elmbridge.

“The Olympic road race and time trial are an opportunity to show Elmbridge off to the world, so it’s important that the borough looks its very best.”
