Flagrant fly-tippers have ignored warnings not to dump rubbish because they do not believe the council is serious about enforcement, a resident has complained.

Bruce Forsyth lookalike Paul Carter, who won the ITV show Stars and Their Doubles, said the junk was a permanent problem in the footpath leading to Commonside West, despite Merton Council warning signs being clearly displayed.

Mr Carter, of Langdale Avenue, Mitcham, suggested cameras be placed in the footpath to deter fly-tippers.

He said: “The only time they’ve done anything was around last Christmas when the council leader himself was down here. A few days later all the rubbish was gone.

“I know from experience the damage fly-tipping can cause.

“Seven years ago I had a nasty accident where I fell and hit my head against a kitchen cabinet dumped on the corner of St Mark’s Road.

“If this was Wimbledon the problem would be sorted out much quicker, but so often in Mitcham we are forgotten.”

Merton Council’s cabinet member for performance and implementation, Councillor Mark Betteridge said: “Fly-tipping is a crime which can seriously affect the quality of life for people in our community.

“For this reason, we take various steps to ensure the culprits are found and the necessary action is taken, including prosecution.

If anyone is seen undertaking such activity let the council know and we will take action.”
