Firefighters were called to put out a fire, which started in a wicker basket inside a flat on Friday evening.
Two fire engines were needed to stop the blaze in High Street, Epsom at 9.20pm.
The fire was put out by 10.15pm, with nobody in the flat at the time.
They were alerted to the fire from smoke coming from the property.
It is believed it may have been caused by a cigarette or a candle, and was found to have started in a wicker basket.
Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
