Following their FA Cup exit at Havant last week, the Robins will be delighted with this comfortable Trophy victory over a Potters Bar side who were fresh from a Cup victory at Premier Division Margate.

As if the victory wasn't enough, the Robins supporters also enjoyed the rare experience of seeing their heroes score four goals for the first time this season.

Potters Bar started briskly and created the first scoring chance when Richard Howard ran on to a through pass to take the ball round keeper Paul Seuke, but John Cartledge was on hand to clear his angled shot from the line.

Having survived this early scare, the Robins were quickly in their stride and a stinging drive from Luke Fontana cutting in from the left was parried by Richard Hayward.

In the 11th minute Alijee Jabbie found himself in a similar position, but on this occasion Hayward failed to hold his fierce shot and the Robins was ahead.

The lead turned out to be short-lived when Richard Howard was given space and time to take the ball down the left flank before picking out Phil Turner in the area who hit home a low shot under Paul Seuke to put the visitors back on terms.

A good run by Howard ended with a shot that rebounded off the upright, but the linesman's flag was already raised for offside.

On the half hour mark Craig Dundas was brought down by Danny Talbot who was booked for his trouble.

Up stepped Mark Marshall and his precise free kick curled over the wall and into the net off the bar to restore the Robins lead.

Carshalton remained on top for the rest of what was an entertaining half.with Potters Bar keeper Hayward enduring an uncertain afternoon.

Jabbie came close to a second goal with another drive that flashed past the far post.

The second period failed to reach the standard of the first with much of the play breaking down in the middle of the park, but the significant contributions came from the home team.

Five minutes in Adrian Toppin won the ball in midfield and strode forward before laying the ball off to Jabbie who was in the mood for another shot, but this time his effort was mishit only to find Luke Fontana on the far side of the area.

This was a situation relished by the returning striker and his shot was deflected past Hayward to put the Robins in the comfort zone.

Fontana had a chance for a second but dragged his shot wide when well placed.

Potters Bar's chance to make the later stages interesting came shortly after when Hartburn was caught out of position and Turner raced into the area.

The advancing Seuke got a hand on his shot and Cartledge was back in time to head over his own bar as the ball dropped towards the goal.

With five minutes left Marshall was fouled on the goal line.

On this occasion Marshall proved to be the provider taking the kick himself and picking out Adrian Toppin at the far post.

The Robins midfielder crowned a fine display with a powerful header into the top corner of the net for his first goal for Carshalton.

The afternoon had a happy ending with the Robins looking forward to Monday's draw and with the injured Drewett, Harwood and Howard all hoping for an early return to the side things may be looking up.
