The Olympic Torch is set to arrive in Croydon in the final week before the Games begin...

 

Arriving from the borough of Bromley at around 11.20am on Monday July 23 the torch will travel through the borough for more than two hours before entering Sutton at about 2pm.

Streets along the route have been marked with official Olympic flags and thousands are expected to line the streets to witness the occasion as the relay, which began back in May in Cornwall, enters its 66th day.

From Crystal Palace Park, it will travel along Church Road down South Norwood Hill and onto Thornton Heath high street. The torch then travels along Brigstock Road, down London Road into the town centre, and out along Croydon Road towards Beddington.

In total eight runners with direct Croydon connections will carry the torch through the borough, with 115 torchbearers carrying the flame during the day...

Your Local Guardian: Croydon torchbearer Amy Terriere 1. Amy Terriere, 35, from Croydon. A former England under 23s cricket player who has continued to work in the sporting world with the British Olympic Association.

She remains a keen sportswoman and has worked at previous winter and summer Olympics.

 


 

Your Local Guardian: Croydon torchbearer Julie Galloway 2. Julie Galloway, 58, from South Croydon, was nominated by a colleague in the Criminal Justice Department at Croydon police after raising hundreds for the Croydon Salvation Army.

She has run two marathons and regularly organises colour themed days in the office to raise money to buy the charity sleeping bags and thermal clothes.

 


 

Your Local Guardian: Croydon torchbearer Jon Dean 2. Jonathan Dean, 54, from South Croydon, is a keen Korfball player, foster carer and Duke of Edinburgh scheme organiser.

An elder at Sanderstead United Reform Church, Mr Dean also runs the Duke of Edinburgh scheme at Archbishop Tenison’s School, Selsdon.

 


 

Your Local Guardian: Croydon torchbearer Mike Fleet 6. Mike Fleet, 74, from Purley, represented Great Britain himself in the 60’s, making the final of the 1962 Commonwealth Games 800m.

An athletics coach with Croydon Harriers, he trained 400m GB Olympic squad member Martyn Rooney and also coaches athletics at Trinity School, Whitgift School and Croydon High School.

 


 

Your Local Guardian: Croydon torchbearer Abbe Stapleton 6. Abbe Stapleton, 36, from Anerley, has worked with charity The Oasis Foundation for 15 years supporting young homeless in Peckham and Croydon as well as working with Oasis Secondary School, Shirley.

The keen charity worker helped establish a homeless housing project in Thornton Heath.

 


 

Your Local Guardian: Croydon torchbearer John Uwins 16. John Uwins, 60, from Sanderstead, is chairman of West Wickham Football and Cricket Club and has seen it grow to include six senior teams and youth squads from under 18s to the juniors.

His whole family is involved in the club and often hold charity events for other organizations.

 


 

Your Local Guardian: Croydon torchbearer Twinelle Hopeson 17. Twinelle Hopeson, 20, from Croydon, missed out on the chance of an Olympic spot but will carry the torch through Croydon.

The 20-year-old sprinter, who won double gold at the UK School Games is involved in the Summer Trust Programme working voluntarily within her community.

 


 

Your Local Guardian: Croydon torchbearer Dafydd Jones 19. Dafydd Jones, 29, from Crystal Palace, has campaigned for three years for charity Beating Bowel Cancer after being diagnosed with the disease himself.

Mr Jones, who is originally from North West Wales, uses website Ebay to run charity auctions, collecting about £7,000, as well as taking on a number of endurance challenges.
