More than 300 children from across south London gathered in Streatham last week to compete in the schools capoeira championship.

The championship, organised by the capoeira federation Uincap, took place at Streatham and Clapham High School on July 12. This year’s winning school was Macaulay CE Primary School, Clapham.

Julians Primary School, Streatham came second while Crown Lane Primary School, also based in Streatham, came third. Children competed and performed alongside capoeira masters from Brazil. Mestre Guimba, director of Uincap, said it was a great experience for the children.

He said: “The children have been training hard all year for this event and it is a great celebration of their achievements, as well as an incentive for them to continue training. “The children also get to play alongside capoeira masters who travelled from Brazil, Italy and France to judge the event.”

There was also a grading ceremony on Saturday, July 14 where 100 students (children and adults) were graded and masters from Brzail and Europe performed.

Uincap runs a capoeira School in Streatham, with classes for adults and children see ddluk.org for more information.
