The medical director of St George's Healthcare NHS Trust has said every patient will be assessed by a nurse every hour throughout the night, following the inquest of Kane Gorny.

Dr Given-Wilson outlined a number of measures which have been taken up by the hospital, after a coroner ruled Mr Gorny died due to neglect of hospital staff last week .

Mr Gorny, 22, of Weir Road, Balham, died of dehydration in St George’s Hospital after medical staff neglected to give him a drink.

He needed regular medication to keep him hydrated after undergoing surgery for a brain tumour.

Dr Given-Wilson said: "The trust has put in place a number of measures to improve communication between medical teams, particularly when planning surgical cases for patients with complicated health needs.

"A SBAR (situation, background, assessment and recommendation) tool has been introduced, which works to help fully evaluate each patient and to gather all the necessary information to ensure accurate and timely communication between clinical teams.

"Electronic ordering and prescribing has been developed to ensure that the complex medical conditions of patients are highlighted to staff.

"Initiatives have also been put in place across the trust to continually monitor and improve out of hours care, including making sure that every patient is assessed by a nurse every hour."

A spokesperson for the trust said: "This was an isolated incident involving a patient with complex health needs who we failed to care for properly."

Last week mum Rita Cronin said the staff in charge of her son's treatment may face criminal prosecution .

In an interview with LBC 97.3 Radio presenter Nick Ferrai she said: "It will never be the same. I think for the last three years I have been ok, I have been fighting for him thinking we were going to get justice."
