The Borough Commander of Sutton police joined frontline officers stopping and searching people and vehicles on Friday.
Det Chief Supt Guy Ferguson was among officers in Throwley Way, pulling over vehicles during a one-hour long impromptu operation to disrupt criminal activity and gather intelligence.
The operation, which began at 12.30pm also involved uniform and plain clothes officers patrolling the streets at the same time.
After stopping a number of vehicles, Mr Ferguson pulled over a Renault Clio after noticing the driver was not wearing a seat belt.
The 18-year-old was received a caution for a first offence of not wearing a seatbelt, and his 19-year-old passenger received a warning after a small quantity of cannabis was found in his wallet.
Mr Ferguson said: "Our officers are out and about in the streets, parks and on buses in uniform and in plain clothes every day to catch and disrupt criminals.
"We will continue to make our presence felt to keep Sutton a low crime borough and one of the safest boroughs in London.
"All our patrols, including the high visibility operation we had today, are extremely valuable in stopping and searching individuals and in gathering intelligence for use in future operations."
