The man responsible for the policing of the Olympics and Paralympics called into Sutton Police Station this morning.
Commander Bob Broadhurst stopped at the station just five hours before the Olympic torch relay is due to arrive in the borough.
He spoke to senior officers at Sutton about the growing excitement that the Olympic torch relay is creating in the capital.
Staff and their families also gained a close-up glimpse of the Olympic Torch.
Commander Broadhurst said: “The Torch has been an amazing draw - everyone wants to see it, touch it and be part of the world’s greatest sporting event.
“It’s our role to keep the Games safe and secure. The world knows about the ‘London Bobby’ now we need our officers to be the best and to make the five million people coming into London feel welcome, and at the same time, be ready to spring into action.”
Borough Commander Guy Ferguson said Sutton will have extra officers on duty throughout the Olympic period. He said: “There will be no let up in our aim to keep crime low and keep Sutton safe.”
Today the torch is on day 66 of its 70-day journey around the country.
Police officers will be along the route this afternoon as the Torch is carried through the borough.
