Crowds swarmed in Brixton to catch a glimpse of the Olympic flame arriving on the penultimate day of the torch relay.

Cheers and excited screams greeted the torch as it was carried into a jam-packed Windrush Square at 12.30pm today.

Spectators, from Brixton and surrounding areas, jostled to see the torch and then spilled onto the road when it left up Acre Lane.

A succession of torchbearers, carried the flame – entering Lambeth at Coldharbour Lane, then running along Clapham Park Road and Clapham High Street before going along Long Road and Cedars Road to Wandsworth.

Brixton resident Sharon Penn, 40, who was with her young children wearing Union Jacks, said she had “never seen anything like it”.
She said: "It was really wicked, really good. It brought everyone together."

Michelle Roberts, 27, born in Brixton, said her family looked the wrong way and missed the torch, but were still really happy to be there.

Ms Roberts said: "It’s amazing to see Brixton so full and everyone enjoying themselves."
Hurdles legend Edwin Moses, who has won Olympic gold medals and broken four world records, also soaked up the atmosphere in the square.

Moses said: "It was great for the community. I am just happy to be here."
Tessa Jowell, MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, described being there as a historic.
She said: "It was one of those moments you remember for the rest of your life.

"The sense of celebration, the optimism and the pride, which really is the essential underpinning of this community.!"

However, Alli Miller, 42, from Gipsy Hill, said the sponsors’ vans, with loud music and dancers, detracted from the wonderful moment.
