Trading standards officers are warning an established scam has made a resurgence with more than 30 residents stung across the borough.
People in Croydon are being targeted by companies asking people to pay an ‘administration charge’ upfront to receive a favourable loan, but after paying are left with nothing.
People have been contacted after searching for loans online, and receive emails, calls or letters to entice them.
Trading standards officers advise residents to remember that no legitimate credit card company or loan provider will ask for payment of an upfront fee by money transfer to guarantee approval. Officers are also advising those approached to search for the company’s name online with the word scam.
Councillor Simon Hoar, cabinet member for community safety, said: "Sadly, in this age of instant communication, people need to be more aware than ever that there are those who are prepared to try any trickery to part them from their money.
"It can’t be stressed strongly enough that you should never send any money or pay any fee upfront to get a loan or a prize. And, remember that you should never reveal your credit card or bank details through an email or over the phone."
People are asked to report any scam or scam attempt they receive by call the Citizen’s Advice Consumer Service on 08454 040506.
