Student security guards hired by G4S chased and caught two men who allegedly stole from a girl at Hampton Court station.

The robbers reportedly ran across Hampton Court bridge after the theft, which took place at about 11.15pm on Monday, July 23, but the G4S students, part of the Bridging the Gap project designed to make up the shortfall in security staff, recognised them from the descriptions given over the airwaves and chased and captured them near the green.

A worker at the site, who asked not to be named, said: “I thought it was really quite impressive especially bearing in mind these people don’t have any experience. “They are trained to guard an Olympics site, not arrest people for street robbery.”

A 16-year-old boy, from Kingston, and a 15-year-old boy from Chessington, were arrested on suspicion of theft.

The students are currently guarding the Olympic centre at Hampton Court green.
