Adventurous youngsters and adrenaline junkie adults have been participating in a risky new sport in Chessington.

Urban sport parkour has been making waves with its climbing and fast jumps through obstacles and apparatus in an indoor hall. Kingston Youth Support Service worker Barnabas Shelbourne brought the activity to the Devon Way Centre sports hall for all to have a go.

Since October last year he has been holding parkour classes and getting more people involved.

He said: “People think parkour is about jumping off buildings, but it is just like any urban sport such as BMX or skateboarding – just much easier to do as there is no skateboard you have to stay on.

“It is all about your body – a personal sport about your own ability and how confident you feel doing different things, what you will and will not do. Your fears are challenged and it is a lot of fun.”

A trained instructor has run 90-minute weekly sessions at the Devon Way Centre on Monday evenings for young and old alike with participation growing day by day. He said: “It is not your usual sport – it is something different. It is the only parkour session around, the next closest one would be in Westminster. “It is a good sport because it is not competitive but still thrilling.

“Your body gets a bit of a shock after the first time, but you get used to it and build your core strength.”

Parkour relies on touch, strength and spirit.
