The Ashley Centre is celebrating an environmental achievement with a series of themed children’s activities.
The shopping mall, in Epsom town centre, was awarded Zero to Landfill status in January, after embarking on a three-year total waste management scheme.
All the waste collected from retailers in the centre is now taken to a sorting plant to be processed for energy recovery, instead of to landfill.
To celebrate the feat, every Wednesday throughout August, from 10am to 4pm, there will be games, giveaways, workshops and competitions and rewards for everyone who joins.
Children can come and watch an erupting volcano, make an explosion and take home a mini volcano kit at Big Planet Day on August 1.
On August 8, the theme will be Growing Green when visitors can make their own pot and grow a plant in it. They will also be able to have a go on the smoothie bike and power their way to making their own healthy drink.
Funky Junk will be the theme on August 15. Children can bring along a piece of recycling to turn into something new, learn what happens to rubbish when it is thrown away and play an interactive recycling game with the Junk Monsters.
The Critters and Creepies Roadshow will be visiting on August 22 when children will be able to meet some amazing animals and bugs including snakes and spiders, and then make their own endangered animal mask.
Water Works will be the final event on August 29 with a giant interactive water cycle. Visitors will be able to learn where rain comes from, where rivers go and make a beautiful water-themed window decoration.
