Police have paid tribute to the spirit of the spectators at the Olympic road races in Surrey at the weekend after making just two arrests.

The men’s race zipped through Leatherhead on Saturday, and the women’s on Sunday - with Lizzie Armitstead getting silver, Team GB's first medal.

On Saturday, police arrested a 54-year-old man in Leatherhead after he encroached on the cycle course as the cyclists approached just after 3pm. 

A police spokeswoman said: "Officers acted quickly and the incident did not impact on the race.

"With further races planned, Surrey Police would like to remind members of the public not to breach security or encroach on the course."

On Sunday, a 42-year-old man was arrested in Dorking, who has been charged with racially aggravated harassment.

Chief Superintendent Gavin Stephens said that it was a successful and safe weekend in Surrey.

He said: "This has been an incredible weekend made all the better with the first Great Britain medal being won at one of our Surrey events.

"There were only two event-related arrests in Surrey over the whole weekend and this is testament to the fantastic spirit of the thousands of people who came out to cheer on the cyclists as they made their way through our county."

The men’s and women’s Individual Time Trial events will now pass through the county on Wednesday.
