A multi-million record seller and pop star of the 60s and 70s is coming to Sutton to be interviewed by a historian.
Gary Walker of the Walker Brothers will feature in a question and answer session with a historian, Alison Weir, at Sutton Library.
Californian native, Gary, brought the band to the UK in 1965 and they had multiple top ten albums and singles including Make it Easy on Yourself and The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine.
Gary Walker, 70, says: “All of us really have fun. I just thought I’d do another one because it’s enjoyable.
“I enjoy it a lot – I like seeing Alison, Patricia and people at the library.
“I think it’s good for fans of that period.
“The girls are worse now than when they were younger.
“Stories will come out – things people never really knew – like were we really brothers? I say ‘yeah we were’ to get them going and then say we were sisters.”
Gary would have hundreds of pairs of knickers thrown at him by his female fans when he performed with the band and he would put them on his head as a joke.
In the 60’s he took his father to the Tower of London and one of his fans spotted him and it had to be closed because of the pandemonium he caused.
He says: “We couldn’t go anywhere – then it went everywhere else – Japan, Germany.
“All mothers hated us because we made their girls cry.”
Gary has a wealth of stories to tell including when he performing for the Emperor of Japan, touring with Jimi Hendrix and meeting the Duke of Edinburgh after a performance at the London Palladium.
He says: “The Duke of Edinburgh afterwards came back and talked to us – he said ‘What have you come to England for?’ I said because we like the rain – you don’t get any rain in California.
“He said ‘God I wouldn’t have come here’."
Despite having millions of adoring fans across the globe he says: “If I had to say the best thing that came out of The Walker Brothers it was finding some girl I really love and having Michael.
“The only thing I regret is not doing it earlier.”
This is the third time the event is taking place and it is organised by the Friends of Sutton Library.
Things you didn’t know featuring Gary Walker, September 4, 7pm, Sutton Library, St Nicholas Way, Sutton, £3.50, tickets available at all Sutton Libraries.
