Matt Holland will not be starstruck should he make Olympic bow in the water polo tomorrow when Great Britain take on waterpolo gold medal favourites Serbia, writes Tim Ashton.

The Carshalton 23-year-old, currently the reserve goalkeeper in the squad, had to watch from the sidelines as his team-mates were beaten 13-4 by Romania on Sunday.

The next test against Serbia will be the toughest of them all – Great Britain also face Hungary, Montenegro and the US – but Matt remains unfazed.

He said: "Serbia will probably win the gold medal and they are a better side than Romania.

"Nothing is expected from us and it will be very tough, but it is good to play against the top teams in the world.

"Being in the same pool as legends such as Slobodan Sporo (Serbia), Denis Sefik (Montenegro) and Zoltan Szcesi (Hungary) is amazing."

Matt, who started playing the sport at Sutton and Cheam Swimming Centre and who now plays for Aix en Provence in France, added:  "It is hard to watch from the sidelines, but I think I will get out against Serbia.

"If I do get in the team, I don’t know how I’ll react. There is nothing to lose so I’ll go out there, do my best, concentrate and make as many saves as possible.

"There is no pressure or expectations on us. As long as we just have to make sure we leave the pool without regrets we have met our objective."
