The council is looking for residents to respond to plans to enforce recycling with fines.

The proposals, approved by Croydon Council, have been put forward as the council looks to save money by reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Fines of £80 would be imposed on households who refuse to use the recycling bins provided.

A survey on the proposal runs until the end of August online at www.croydon.gov.uk/compulsory or available at libraries across the borough.

Councillor Phil Thomas, cabinet member for highways and environmental services, said: "People’s views are important to us – they help us to shape our policies and decide on how services should be delivered.

"This is an important issue, and we want to make sure that if we do go down this route we get it right. By increasing the amount of waste that gets recycled we can save council tax payers millions of pounds over coming years."
