Friends of murdered musician Umar Tufail plan to start a charity in his name.

The 25-year-old died after being gunned down while sat in his car, outside his home in Wharncliffe Road, South Norwood, on July 15.

Umar, a rapper who performed under the name of Humuh Humz, was passionate about music and was set to release his début single Let Me Know when he died.

His friends, Charmaine Tomlinson and Courtney Allen have said they are keen to found a charity in memory of Umar, which will aim to help young people and prevent them from becoming involved in gang life.

Mr Allen, who knew Mr Tufail since they were 10-years-old said: "The charity planning is in an infant stage. We have both agreed children grow up with a lack of good male role models, as well as positive activities to do.

"These are among many reasons why we see them fall into crime at a young age."

Mrs Tomlinson said: "We are thinking about starting up a football academy in memory of Umar to keep youths off the streets and to prevent them from getting bored and joining a gang.

"It is about getting them to realise their potential in life."

The decision to start a memory in Umar's name has been welcomed by his parents.

His dad Sajid Tufail, said: "It is about time we stood up and put a stop to this nonsense. The Umar trust idea is to get these youngsters at a young age and give them a focus in life.

"Everyday there is a stabbing or a shooting, and this needs to stop. I think Umar could be the start of change."
