Molesey Boat Club's Greg Searle, James Foad and Moe Sbihi secured a heroic rowing bronze for Team GB in the men's eight at Eton Dorney.
GB briefly led mid-way through the race, but couldn't hold off eventual winners Germany and defending Olympic champions Canada over the last 500m in a thrilling race.
Molesey Boat Club members roared on their heroes at the club's Graburn Way base, while the partisan crowd in Berkshire came close to making the difference.
The result came moments after Team GB women's pairs stars Helen Glover and Heather Stanning collected their country's first gold of the 2012 Games.
