A boxing legend saw his dream come true when he got invited to the Olympic opening ceremony.

Bob Wells, who won a bronze medal in boxing at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, had been "gutted" to have missed out on Olympic tickets.

But after a last minute invitation to attend the ceremony at the Olympic Stadium, Wells said it "was a dream come true".

Wells, who is also a volunteer for the Olympics said: "I'm so pleased, it made my day when I found out I had an invite. To actually be involved in two Olympic games is incredible."

The former Olympian said it was about time people who have competed at the level should be recognised at their home Olympics.

He said: "I competed for this country and not only that, I won a medal. Until now we have been overlooked, so it is great we have got an invite, even though it was so late. I would like to thank Tom Brake for putting his weight behind the cause."

Wells said volunteering has been hard work. He said: "Today has been my first day off so far, so it's nice to relax. It is genuinely hard work, but the volunteers are brilliant people. They have given up their time to help others and keep things running smoothly."
