A conman has been cheating people out of money by posing as a cash-strapped builder in need of a train fare home.

Surrey Police has warned people to be on the lookout for the man, who has been operating in the Leatherhead area for several weeks.

The man approaches people in the street saying he is a builder, that his van has broken down and that he needs a small amount of money - usually £2.50 or £3 - towards his train ticket home.

He is described as in his late 40s, white, 5ft 6ins tall, with fair hair and is fairly well-dressed.

There have so far been seven reports of the fraudster from members of the public, but police believe there could be many more victims.

Police Community Support Officer Bob Apperley said: "Not only are we warning people to be on their guard but appealing for anyone who has any information to contact us.

"I have stepped up patrols in the area where he usually operates between the BP garage in Kingston Road along Bull Hill to Lidl, Leret Way and the Swan shopping centre car park but urge anyone who is approached to call us immediately."
